Ruth asks…

Is 140000 miles good for a used 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue?

I’m considering buying one, but I’ve found very mixed reviews online. I need the car for going to and from work during the summer, and commuting 200 miles a week during the school year. Any suggestions/comments/opinions? Thank you! :)

Stephen Clinton answers:

My 1993 Oldsmobile had 345,000 miles on it when I finally sold it. Still running strong with no major engine repairs done on it.

140,000 is barely broken in.

I currently have a 1995 Oldsmobile with 180,000 on it and it runs & looks new.

Betty asks…

How long should it take me to study for all 4 parts of the CPA?

I will be graduating shortly from Ohio State University with a degree in Accounting but I have not landed a job yet. I really want to work for the big 4 but since I have not received an offer, I was thinking of studying for the CPA and passing it then trying again which should hopefully increase my chances. I will be working only part-time so I can fully focus on studying. I am pretty good at studying by dedicating myself therefore I will probably buy the Roger Philip online CPA review course. Anyways, how much time do you think I should dedicate to studying each section if I really don’t have any other engagements. I appreciate all comments. Thanks.

Stephen Clinton answers:

I studied 32 hours a week for six months, and still had to retake the practice section. But things have changed since I took it in 1978. Try to get some sleep the night before the exam starts, take a few candy bars for energy, and answer questions you know well first, come back to the more difficult questions, if totally stumped–ask yourself what do I know about this topic–it will help you recall.
I wish you the best.

Anyone hiring a online writer that would work for free?

I would prefer to review products such as games, books (ect.).

Stephen Clinton answers:

A suggestion: Start a self-published book review site. People who self-publish are _desperate_ for reviews. Good luck!

To find them, go to http://lulu.com and look around.

Laura asks…

How to cite an unpublished article in MLA style?

I’m currently working on a term paper and one of my research sources is a grad student’s thesis (that he submitted in order to be considered for a master’s degree). Does anyone know the specific rules on how I would put this article in my works cited

? Given that this article is not part of a journal or anything, it’s just available online for review. I’ve looked online but can’t seem to find the proper format for this specific type of article, if anyone knows how to do this properly please let me know! Thanks in advance! =)

Stephen Clinton answers:

I know for sure your going to need his first and last name and date his work was published. You should be good with those but there are possibly more information needed. So like I said his first and last name date he has on the thesis and also the title of the thesis also possibly the school he was attending when he published the thesis. Good luck. As for how to cite the information you used. If your extracting and full sentence or more of his of course you would have to use quotes and possibly his last name at the end. If its a thought or idea that is based on you reading his thesis you could possibly put his last name or the date he published his thesis at the end of the paragraph. MLA and APA may seem vastly different when your formatting and term paper yet if you use one of the suggestions or more I gave you I believe you should be ok.

Sandra asks…

Youth hostel first time experience and staff writing you back about honest review you gave online!?

I stayed in a youth hostel in Belgrade that I found online through a major website. My stay there was actually very pleasant- the hostel was clean, quiet, comfortable, new and the staff was helpful and considerate. It’s one of the best ways to get to know a city from a local perspective adnd they even let me spend an extra afternoon for free of charge because my train was leaving late. The only reason why they got somewhat less than perfect score (83%) was because of the location, some minor issues with staff and because I had to grade other things like fun and parking that I did not have much experiences with. It took me about 45 minutes of walking to get there with all of my bags.

I knew the hostel was a little bit far (one of reviews reviews said only 10-15 minutes) but I did not want to get a taxi or tram. I got to know the city better that way and the hostel was still pretty close to some of the attractions. Although the staff was helpful I got annoyed because they did not change bed sheets for two days after some other guests left and I wondered if they change them regularly after each guest. While I was eating breakfast I could also hear conversation among two staff members who complained about pay and working conditions like not having much to do. They were aware I spoke their language and they still kept bitching. I feel that their behavior was not only unprofessional as least but also annoying. So I left supposedly an anonymous review and they wrote me back saying they deserved a perfect score because they went an extra mile to help me with a stay. They also said I should have graded their staff better and that the next time I should get a tram. Their response was cynical in nature and they even wished me to find a perfect hostel next time. I feel I was wrong not to give them a better score and to compliment their staff in my review, while on the other hand I felt I needed to be honest for the sake of other travelers. Shouldn’t they just swallow their pride and just let it go. Come on, they should not even bother if other reviews were all great and if they know they are doing a good job otherwise! Or was i wrong by being a little bit too critical of them?

Stephen Clinton answers:

They are extremely unprofessional to write back to you and respond to your review. If you had e-mailed the manager directly and complained about something, then they should respond to you. But they should not be responding to reviews posted for other travelers to read. They are being childish and unprofessional, and I suspect that the person who e-mailed you would be in trouble if his/her boss found out they had responded that way to you. Your honest opinion is your honest opinion – they can’t change how YOU felt about your visit. Maybe 10000 other people had no complaints about the distance to the hostel, but if one person has a problem with it, then that is their opinion and nobody can call them “wrong” about that opinion. You should ignore their response – don’t get into an e-mail war with this staff person. I think your review was fair. They’re not always going to get 100% grade from every traveler.
